Already having released one EP this year it seems Already having released one EP this year it seems Pip Hall is building a King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard work ethic. She’s building a big name for herself and has even been hailed as the “successor to the crown bestowed on Lorde”. I sat down to listen to her latest release Ill At Ease.
In an interview with BBC Radio Lancashire she said her sound comes from “me and my limited gear in my bedroom”. Having listened to most of her work now her statement blows me away. Throughout the track she manages to make such a huge sound from her relatively small collection of instruments. Pip looks ready to release her album next year and she undoubtedly has potential to make it one of the best 2018 has to `offer.
The track starts in quite an alternative manner with the listener hearing guitars and drums introduced before any vocals. This shows the already achieved huge talents Pip has achieved. Lyrically the song seems to focus on an inner turmoil of some form with Pip singing in the chorus “I’m only asking for my mind to be mine”. Pip recently said in an interview with BBC Radio Lancashire “All my writing comes from folk music”, however so early in her career it feels as though she’d be the inspiration for others not vice versa.
It’s such a unique song from it’s synth-style guitars to it’s difficult lyrics. Luckily as young as she may be she’s so mature both as a musician and as a songwriter.
