Strange Cages - The Cracks

June 16, 2017

Brighton is a place overflowing with musical talent, one of it’s latest exports being self described ‘reptile garage/sleaze punk’ trio Strange Cages. Strange they certainly are, but in the best of ways. They’ve already caused a stir despite being a young band, already having secured themselves a support slot with King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard; now they’re ready to share their new EP The Cracks with the world.

The Cracks kicks off to a gritty, roaring start with it’s title track. Within a minute of listening it’s easy to imagine the madness Strange Cages could create amongst a sweaty packed out crowd. For once, vocals are the last thing to grasp my attention; the driving drums and fuzzy, addictive riffs take full control with this EP while the intense, moody vocals simply add the finishing touch.

The fourth of six tracks, Lavasurf Lovesong comes away from the darker feel of the rest with an energetic, bouncy riff. The instrumental breaks sound as though they belong in a cheerful pop song, yet somehow are the perfect fit for Strange Cages and their madness.

Finishing off with Leader Of A Cult, this is an EP that really caught me off guard. It’s far from my usual taste with it’s mix of psychedelia, punk and garage rock, but I’ve found myself loving every second of it. Strange Cages are certainly talented, and if they’re to continue making music of this quality then I most definitely want to hear what else they have to come.
