I imagine if you crossed The Kooks with Jamie T, what you’d get is something along the lines of Wigan four piece, Ravellas. With support from BBC Introducing and a place in Spotify’s ‘Fresh Finds’ playlist for their debut single, it’s no surprise that the four have already earned themselves a dedicated following.
Having caught Ravellas supporting the ever delightful Marsicans back in February, I was intrigued to hear the latest release from the Wigan boys, Colour Me Sweet. My expectations were of course met with a very Northern sounding, upbeat and infectious track, exactly as I’d heard back at Manchester’s Deaf Institute.
Thrashing yet cheerful drums set the perfect backing for the huge, addictive riffs which come with them. The almost spoken yet upbeat vocals of frontman Mac are what really set it off though, with a bolshy chorus which simply makes you want to bounce, Ravellas have created a storming indie-rock track which gives a little more hope in Wigan than anyone knew was even possible.
