Get to know... SPINN
Liverpool’s ‘jangly dream pop’ four piece SPINN have been causing a bit of a stir with their new single Notice Me. Written with the intention of gaining radio play from BBC Introducing, the track proves their knack for infectious hooks and shimmering sunny sounds.
Following the release of Notice Me, we had a chat with the band to find out what they’re all about.
Who are SPINN and how did you meet?
SPINN is Johnny Quinn, Andy Power, Sean McLachlan and George Whitehead, we all kinda met each other from #SuperCoolParties and school
What was the inspiration for the new single, Notice Me?
Hero Worship was the idea behind it lyrically, its also excellent life just shout NOTICE ME into your heroes face to show them how much you appreciate them. One day I hope to meet some of my heroes and scream it in their face to initiate conversation.
What made you decide to want to become musicians?
Alex Turner, I saw a girl scream (in a good way) when he fixed his hair at a gig and thought "hey, that's pretty cool, might as well give that a go". As of yet nobody has swooned at any gig we've played :'(
How would you describe your sound to someone who hasn’t heard your music before?
tasteful jangly sludge with some singing in it
If you weren’t in a band, what do you think each of you would be doing career wise?
I'd be a cowboy, andy an astronaut, george would be a pirate and sean would be on the dole X
Who are you influences as musicians?
I'm gonna say Soko, Daniel Johnston and Father John Misty bc I've been listening to them today and theres too many #SPINNfluences to list
If you could do a show with anyone (dead or alive) who would it be?
Charles Bradley has a pretty impressive voice, would be cool to sing with him and be put to shame. Obvs theres people like David Bowie or Freddie Mercury, proper showmen them
How does it feel to be part of the current UK music scene with so many new artists coming out onto the scene, do you think there’s a lot of competition to be heard?
I don't really see anybody as competition, and wouldn't say we were competition for anybody else. The music scene should be one massive family, just gotta help each other out haven't ya, thats what makes the scene go round <3
What do you get up to when you’re not making music?
I watch river monsters in my underwear, dreaming of better times to come where the tories have no majority and I can afford a bus fare without having to skip lunch :(
Lastly, will we be able to catch you at any live shows over the next few months?
Yes. Most notably with our boys Violet Youth in their hometown gig in Blackburn 28th of July.
