Hydromag - Sweet Obsession
Sweet Obsession is the debut EP from Canterbury based Hydromag. Written and produced by multi-instrumentalist Josh Best-Saw, the EP came together following the ending of a relationship with Josh aiming to write lyrics which are relatable, while being about his own personal experience. Having been played on Radio 1, Radio 6 and BBC Introducing in Kent, Josh’s solo project Hydromag is already off to a solid start.
The first track on the EP is title track Sweet Obsession. Steadied piano quickly creates a beautiful atmosphere, with Josh’s soft vocals heightening the dreamy feeling. An electronic beat adds a whole new level to the track, giving the feeling that this is truly something a bit special.
Let It Out brings the energy up a little as various instruments come into play, creating something which sounds to me like a cross between Bombay Bicycle Club and The XX. It’s still the ever so gentle vocals which really capture my attention, but synth really brings out the chilled atmosphere of Hydromag.
The earliest release of the EP, I Need To Know has so many different sounding elements that it’s almost impossible to call it one sound or another; it just works. It’s dance beat combined with a chilled but catchy guitar riff and those vocals which I just can’t get enough of work together so perfectly that all I can really say about it is that you really, really need to give it a listen.
The EP flows to an end with beautifully jangly guitar and the addition of a simple yet crucial bass riff in Primrose Hill. The final track sums up Sweet Obsession perfectly; a soothing atmosphere which keeps you nodding your head along with sun drenched beats, while those ever so dreamy vocals remove almost every thought from your mind.
I'm slightly taken aback by just how powerful the atmosphere Josh has created really is, for me Sweet Obsession is a sure favourite EP of the year and I’ll certainly be looking out for more from Hydromag in the future.
